DÜRFEN SIE DAS? is an educational campaign for Berlin. It aims to inform what the police in Berlin are allowed to do in different roles and situations, and how we – people who are not police – can behave when we come into contact with them.
There is an information gap: People who do not have extensive knowledge of the rights of the police tend to be completely unaware of them in confrontations. Forced into the situation, they often have no choice but to accept the assertions and actions of police officers. This often creates a feeling of powerlessness in the face of state power. An atmosphere is created in which power structures can be exploited. In order for us to live a self-determined life, it is first important to know how to interact with an institution that has the power to interfere with our liberties.
Additionally, the police are perceived differently by different segments of society. While some feel protected by the police, members of marginalized communities, for example homeless people or BIPoCs (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color), sometimes cannot expect protection from them.
We want to change that.

This campaign is designed to give every person the opportunity to seek information from an independent source. To do this, it will be made as accessible as possible and in a variety of languages. It will be devoted primarily to practical education rather than theoretical and forward-looking issues. It will offer answers and tips, but not legal advice. DÜRFEN SIE DAS? is intended to help people safely and confidently navigate situations in which they come into contact with the police.
DÜRFEN SIE DAS? actively opposes all forms of bigotry, in particular fascism, racism, anti-Semitism, anti-ziganism, sexism, ableism, homophobia, transphobia, ageism and classism. The association sees itself as an anti-hierarchical collective, financed by donations. Any person who supports the principles of the association can join.
